Govardhan Puja is traditionally performed during the morning period on Kartik Shukla Pratipada. The precise muhurat varies according to the city because sunrise and other Panchang calculations differ from place to place.

For reference, the morning muhurat published for Bengaluru is approximately 6:16 AM to 8:35 AM. Devotees should consult a reliable local Panchang or their family priest for the timing applicable to their location.

Timings are local. The Lucknow timings above are based on the published Drik Panchang calculation. Other Panchang traditions may differ slightly.

What Is Govardhan Puja?

Govardhan Puja, also called Annakut Puja, is celebrated on the first day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Kartik. It is associated with the divine act of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect the people and cattle of Vrindavan from torrential rain.

The festival reminds devotees that nature is not merely a resource to be used but a blessing to be respected and protected. Mountains, rivers, forests, animals and the land that sustains life all deserve gratitude.

Devotees worship Lord Krishna, offer food preparations, decorate their homes and temples, and in many regions create a symbolic Govardhan Hill using cow dung, soil or other traditional materials.

The Story of Govardhan Puja: Why Did Krishna Lift the Mountain?

According to the popular Hindu tradition, the people of Gokul and Vrindavan once prepared elaborate offerings to worship Lord Indra, the deity associated with rain and thunderstorms. Their prosperity depended heavily on rainfall, and they believed that pleasing Indra would ensure good harvests and abundance.

Young Krishna questioned the practice. He explained that the people of Vrindavan depended directly on Govardhan Hill, its forests, pastures, water and natural resources. Their cattle grazed there, and the mountain supported their everyday livelihood.

Krishna encouraged the villagers to express gratitude to Govardhan Hill and the natural world that sustained them. The villagers accepted his advice and performed the worship of Govardhan.

Indra became furious when he learned that the traditional offerings had been redirected. In anger, he unleashed powerful storms and relentless rainfall over Vrindavan.

To protect the villagers and their cattle, Krishna lifted the mighty Govardhan Hill on his little finger. The people took shelter beneath it, and Krishna held the mountain aloft for seven days, protecting everyone from the storm.

Eventually, Indra realised the divine nature of Krishna and withdrew his pride. The episode became a timeless lesson about humility, devotion and the power of divine protection.

The central message: True devotion is not about pride or display. It is about gratitude, humility, compassion and respect for the natural world.

Why Is Govardhan Puja Also Called Annakut?

The word Annakut means a mountain or heap of food. On this day, devotees prepare a large variety of vegetarian dishes and arrange them as an offering to Lord Krishna.

The food may include rice, lentils, vegetables, sweets, savoury preparations, fruits and traditional delicacies. In many Krishna temples, the offerings are arranged in elaborate displays resembling a mountain.

After the ritual offering, the food is distributed among devotees as prasad. This tradition symbolises abundance, sharing, gratitude and the belief that food is a divine blessing.

Govardhan Puja Vidhi: Step-by-Step Rituals

1. Clean and prepare the worship area

Clean the home and the place of worship. Decorate the area with flowers, rangoli and lamps. Place the image or idol of Lord Krishna respectfully.

2. Prepare the Govardhan representation

In communities where the tradition is followed, prepare a symbolic Govardhan Hill using cow dung or soil. Decorate it with flowers, leaves and small representations of trees, animals or other natural elements.

3. Worship Lord Krishna

Offer flowers, sandalwood paste, roli, akshat, incense and a lit diya. Remember Krishna as Govardhandhari, the protector of the people of Vrindavan.

4. Offer Annakut

Prepare vegetarian dishes according to family tradition and arrange them as an offering before the deity. The scale of the offering can be simple or elaborate; devotion and gratitude are more important than quantity.

5. Perform aarti and prayer

Perform the aarti of Lord Krishna and offer prayers for the well-being of the family, community, animals and nature.

6. Distribute prasad

After the offering, distribute the food among family members, neighbours and devotees. Sharing food is an important expression of the spirit of Annakut.

Important Mantras for Govardhan Puja

Devotees may chant Krishna's names and traditional prayers during worship. One simple mantra is:

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय।
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

Another devotional invocation is:

श्रीकृष्ण गोविन्द हरे मुरारे।
हे नाथ नारायण वासुदेव॥

Chanting may be accompanied by the recitation of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna bhajans or Govardhan-related devotional songs.

Govardhan Puja and the Worship of Cows

Cows hold a special place in many Hindu traditions, particularly in the stories and devotional practices associated with Lord Krishna. Krishna is lovingly remembered as Gopal and Govinda, names connected with the protection and care of cows.

In several regions, cows and bulls are decorated, fed and worshipped on this occasion. The practice reflects respect for animals and recognition of their contribution to rural life.

Any animal-related ritual should be conducted gently, without forcing animals to participate or exposing them to unsafe decorations, loud sounds or harmful substances.

How Is Govardhan Puja Celebrated in Different Parts of India?
