Chaos erupted during the grand opening of Mall in Karachi, Dream Bazaar as thousands of eager shoppers turned the event into a scene of looting and vandalism. The incident raises concerns about event management and security in Karachi.
Inaugural Event Turns Violent as Thousands Overrun The Mall in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar. What was supposed to be a milestone event in Pakistan’s retail history turned into a chaotic nightmare as the grand opening of the Mall Dream Bazaar in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar descended into utter pandemonium. The much-anticipated launch of the country’s largest thrift store, promoted heavily on social media, quickly spiraled out of control as throngs of people stormed the venue, leading to widespread looting and vandalism.
The New mall, Dream Bazaar, the brainchild of an expatriate Pakistani entrepreneur, was expected to revolutionize thrift shopping in the region. The promise of exclusive discounts drew thousands to the mall on its opening day, but the overwhelming turnout proved to be disastrous.
At 3 PM, as the mall officially opened its doors, the excitement of the crowd rapidly escalated into chaos. Social media is now flooded with videos of the incident, showing hundreds of individuals forcing their way into the mall, pushing past the grand staircase, and turning the once-celebratory atmosphere into a scene of destruction.
Reports indicate that the mall’s staff struggled to maintain control, but their efforts were in vain as the crowd overpowered them. Eyewitness accounts describe the disturbing scenes of lawlessness, with looters grabbing whatever they could and some even documenting their actions on their smartphones.
Despite the growing disorder, local authorities were notably absent, leaving the staff and a handful of security personnel overwhelmed. The lack of police presence has sparked criticism, with many questioning the preparedness for such a large-scale event.
One video, which has gone viral, captures the heart-breaking moment a mall employee expresses his disappointment at the devastation. “We built this for the people, but until they understand the value of it, things won’t change,” he lamented.
The chaotic events at the one of the biggest Mall’s grand opening have left a stain on what was supposed to be a landmark day for Karachi’s retail sector. The aftermath of the looting has prompted concerns over the management and security measures for future events of this scale in the city.
